We had to order it online just make sure that you email them as they make this in batches years apart and you could end up with one that expires within a year we waited for a new shipment that was good for 5 years I don't remember who we got it from should be a post on here though Ill see if I can find it and post the link here... we got 2 bottles one for here and one for the retreat.... I keep a vile with 4 or 6 pills in it with me 24/7 kept on key chain...

This company only accepts orders within Canada. The Reagent grade is outrageously pure, at least 99.8 % .

Anyone allergic to shellfish? I've been looking for years for an alternative to potassium iodide for my granddaughter and sister, as a dose could kill them. There doesn't seem to be anything else. I suppose one has to make a tough decision as to which is the bigger risk.

It might be possible, or maybe there is some kind of allergy immunotherapy treatment. I'll do some research and see. I don't know if allergy shots work for food-type allergies, but there may be some information out there on something that can be done. I'd want to get the advice of someone who knows more than I do about medical conditions because this type of allergy can make your throat swell shut. I would think if anyone in Japan is dealing with this dilemma, they would at least be administering it under a doctor's supervision. In some situations, that wouldn't be possible.

Still checking. Even the Mayo Clinic didn't have any advice except avoidance. So far, it might be a case of keeping epinephrine and lots of antihistamine on hand, and hoping it doesn't come to that. If I find anything useful, I will share it. I'm going to keep looking.

I know kelp is hi in iodine no idea how much you would have to take to get it up to were it would help with the iodine 131 though it could be a hand full or a bushel full...

They sell kelp capsules for that purpose, but there seems to be a debate going on as to whether they would be as effective.

I think the problem would lye in how many you would need to swallow to get up to the needed iodine dose...
I don't know if a few would do it or if you would need a few bowl full to get a hi enough dose of iodine...

I just thought i'd throw in my 2-cents on KI Canada.

I ordered potassium iodide tablets from them a while back. There was no response for about 10-12 days and then an email saying they would get back to me. A couple of days later another email with shipping details. Three or four days after that I received the KI. I'd deal with them again.

Side note: After I dealt with KI Canada and could recommend them, I sent all of the order info to my family so they could order their own. I also sent info outlining that we are downwind from several reactors (Point Lepreau, Maine Yankee, etc.).

Instead, they all responded that they would just come to my house if there was a nuclear event. Sigh.

I don't think that you need to worry about it expiring. It is after all a pure stable chemical compound (KI) and it shouldn't degrade into anything else. I think that the expiration date was put on because of some idiotic government regulation required it for all medical items regardless of type. We used to have to put expiration dates on things such as sterile water and sodium chloride in the labs because of FDA good laboratory practice requirements. Dumb....

if its the pill form like we have then the KI is not the problem its the filler that they use to make the compressed pill that is the problem....

I do have it in pure form and just make a water solution if and when we need it 1 tsp will make hundreds of doses too...
