System restore in Win 7

A short time back I installed something and it buggered up the machine. I did a system restore to an earlier date, before the install and the machine is back to its old self.
This got me to thinking.
This machine was Vista and then HP sent me the upgrade to Win7 disk and it became a Win7 machine.
In the past with MS systems there can come a time when its so buggered up one finds they need to reinstall the OS to start over.
In the case of Win7 and system restore could one just simple restore the system to the earliest date and avoid having to go through all the pain of an OS reinstallition?

yes that can work saving you the pain of a reinstall but my problem with Windows anything is that eventually it sucks all the life out of your computer and it runs so slow after the updates that it may as well become a door stop and all due to poor programming with bloated coding... I have given up on windows and gone to the dark side linux ubuntu and life is good.....

I too had problems with windows, Win98 on up to Vista.
Win 7 so far so good.

wait for a couple years of updates I have had all the windows operating systems from the beginning and that goes all the way to dos oh my!
